More homeless in Vancouver, but many moving into shelters

VANCOUVER - Vancouver escalated pressure on provincial housing officials Thursday, releasing survey results showing the number of people sleeping outdoors in the city has been cut in half since the opening of new shelters while the overall rate of homelessness has jumped by 12 per cent since 2008.

The province plans to stop funding the seven shelters on April 30.

The March 23 count of homeless people found 428 living on the streets compared to 811 two years ago. The new survey also found that total homelessness — people living on the streets and in shelters — has climbed to 1,762 people from 1,576 in 2008.

Donor who gave Liberal's $50,000 got casino contract two months later

VICTORIA — T. Richard Turner, the Liberal insider who pushed for a retractable roof on BC Place, donated $50,000 to the B.C. Liberal Party two months before his company was named as the preferred bidder for a mega hotel and casino project next to the stadium.

The donation, which Turner said was made through his family company on April 30, 2009, is by far the largest on record given by Turner or his immediate companies to the Liberals.

Gay MLA weds and takes husband's name

BC's legislative assembly will soon be referring to one of its members by his gay married name — at least on paper.

Vancouver-West End NDP MLA Spencer Herbert tied the knot with longtime partner Romi Chandra on March 27, and three days later, announced his intention to take Chandra's last name, making him Spencer Chandra Herbert.
