Lastly, this past month has been a busy one and we've had a number of victories that I am proud to share with you! The first is a victory for homelessness prevention through the creation of a Rent Bank. As you may remember my office brought key community leaders together from the Street to Home Foundation, Vancity, the Surrey Rent Bank, the Network of Inner City Community Services, and the City of Vancouver to begin work to found a Vancouver wide Rent Bank.
After much work, on March 28th City Council took the final step and gave their support to our work, and a new Vancouver Rent Bank should be up and running by August!
To witness it come to fruition is rewarding and represents another step forward in keeping Vancouverites in their homes and preventing unnecessary homelessness. Click here to learn more about rent banks I'm also very proud of the efforts of our NDP Caucus who have stood with community partners and businesses, like Vancouver’s The Rio and Denman Theatre, to call on the Liberal government to amend outdated liquor regulations. This week the Liberal government agreed, and in the case of The Rio, these amendments will save one of Vancouver’s oldest cultural venues. Click here to read the article in the Georgia Straight
There's always lots going on in the West End but I hope that you won't hesitate to contact me with any issues of concern or just to say hello. My door (and email inbox!) is always open!
Sincerely, Spencer Chandra Herbert, MLA Vancouver-West End www.spencerchandraherbert.ca |
